This journal is an archive of the experiences of a UB student in the 2007-2008 school year; it’s no longer being updated. If you’d like to read about some current UB students, please check out this year’s bloggers.
As the last week of school begins, I must say that the lack of motivation and the need for school to end has taken me over. This last month has been going pretty well though. Here’s a recap since I was quite busy for a while and didn’t get a chance to update.
I went to see Evita at the Center for the Arts for $20 (yay for student tickets!) with my sister and it was amazing. I was looking through the program and there was definitely someone from UB in the show! That was exciting to read about. The did a great job though and we had really good seats. It was only here for two days so I’m glad we made it out.
My senior honor society, Mortar Board, also went to one of the local elementary schools and did a literacy program called Dr. Seuss is Loose! We gave out over 150 new Dr. Seuss books which we purchased with a grant we received from First Book! First, we acted out the Cat in the Hat in an assembly for all of the kids. I was the Cat in the Hat and it was so much fun. After we did the play we had other kids come up and do reading theatre, basically read the script and act it out on stage with us. After the assembly we went to each of the classrooms and had each of the children draw and write it Imagination Pads we brought for them. They thought of a lot of great stories to write about. One went to the ball with a tutu wearing hippo, and others met flying fish on their journey. The program went great!
At the moment, I’m just attempting to finish out really well. It’s so important to go out with a bang so I’m not going to let this whole “senioritis” thing bog me down. Better get back to work!!
I love when unexpected free time pops up! I had a class this week that’s supposed to be three hours and definitely only lasted for 45 minutes and today, our staff meeting was no more than 20 minutes if that. I never know what to do with myself! I definitely take the time out though to do some relaxing and finish some leftover homework that I have to do. Always a great surprise.
This week has been pretty light, and definitely needed since our V-Day campaign kind of took over my life since we came back from Spring break. Now I’m playing catch up and working on getting back into the swing of things with school. Tomorrow I don’t have lab which will also free up some extra time (YAY!) so I’ll definitely make sure to utilize that.
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is on TBS right now. I think it is such a funny movie! I love having movies on in the background when I’m doing work, gives me something to do when I feel like taking a break.
I desparately need to go grocery shopping. This whole, eating peanut butter out of the jar thing is not working out anymore. It’s either that or I just keep going out to eat, which is definitely draining my pockets. I’ll make it sooner or later.
Well now I have to do a paper and finish a presention which I will need to do in about a week. Wish me luck!
Today was UB’s Spring Open House for accepted students. We were around all day making sure that everyone got to see everything they wanted to before making their college decisions. I love working Spring Open House. Being in the same position as all the students that came today, I really enjoy being able to help people get the information they need to make as educated a decision as possible. I knew so many people working at it and even bumped into a couple families I gave tours to! All in all a great event.
During the Open House, along with working, I also presented my research at the Honors College Poster Session. I had been working on my poster for a few weeks and was really excited (and nervous!!) about presenting it. I practiced and made note cards and made anyone who has ears listen to what my research was on. We were also told to wear “business casual” and since I took my laundry home to do and never brought it back with me, my clothing options were limited and my lack of fashion sense wasn’t helping either. I found something to wear and walked through my building asking people what style of clothing they thought I was wearing. Desparate times call for desparate measures I guess. At home, my sister is my fashion consultant but here, I’m all on my own in that department. Good thing I have some great friends in the residence halls to help me out!
Regardless, the stress was not worth it because it ended up going really well. They had a bunch of prizes to give out for the posters but I had to give a tour right after the session so I was unable to find out if I got anything. I’m sure I’ll find out sooner or later.
Tomorrow is my brother’s birthday so I went out with my family for dinner. We went to three different places before we found a place without a two hour wait, which ended up being our favorite restaurant anyways, Taste of India. It was so good!!
After that I went to see a show at the Center for the Arts. HT Chen and Dancers ended up being an amazing show filled with emotion and drama and so many new aspects of dance that I’d never experienced. My lack of sleep lately made me a bit sleepy near the end of the show. As I was walking out, I randomly bumped into my roomates who were just walking around giving their visiting friend a tour. They’re so cute.
Well, off to bed. My eyes refuse to stay open any longer.
So this week has been our V-Day Campaign and it has been really successful! Yesterday we had our “These Hands Don’t Hurt” campaign in the student union where people could make a pledge to a life of non-violence by putting their handprint on the windows of the student union. We got so many people and also did some great publicity for our shows this week. Then, today, I found out that we made the front page of the Spectrum!!! The Spectrum is our school newspaper and anyone who’s anyone reads it. I’m glad too because our handprint display will be up all week so this way everyone will know what it symbolizes. Check it out on the Spectrum Online!!
Tonight was the first night of our show and it went GREAT! We were almost sold out and had an amazing performance by everyone. I’m exhausted now but we have two more shows so I need to keep my energy high until then. Tomorrow is our show in the Woldman Theatre, which holds 350 people so hopefully we get a lot of people to come.
In other news, classes have been good. In my dance class today, we had a special treat and were honored to have HT Chen and Dancers, who will also be performing at our school on Saturday at the Main Stage Theatre of the Center for the Arts, be present in our class. They danced so beautifully and I wish I had 1/32490 of their ability and talent. It was nice being able to dance with them as well as observe them to improve upon my dancing as well.
Well, lots to do before tomorrow!! Goodnight!
What a nice weekend! I slept for a good chunk of it which was a nice, rejuvenating part of it. We also had final rehearsals for our shows, all of which went quite well. Our campaign is actually front and center on our school website (check it out at www.buffalo.edu - I don’t know how long it’ll be up there for). We’re meeting at 6am tomorrow too to do some advertising on campus. Good thing I got some good sleep in already!
Today was Easter and being Hindu, I wasn’t celebrating however, a friend of mine from the School of Social Work at UB informed me of this great event which a few of us friends ended up going to. Friends of the Night People is a non-profit organization that has been serving dinner and providing supportive services on a daily basis for over 30 years to people in Buffalo who are homeless or working poor. Tonight they were strapped for volunteers since many people were home celebrating the holiday with their families. My Jewish/other Hindu friends though who came tonight were more than happy to spend the holiday helping others who celebrate enjoy the festivities. There was a nice dinner prepared including potatoes, carrots, cabbage, ham, beets, squash, rolls and assorted desserts. It makes me so happy to know that in our world, in our own community, there are people willing to give themselves everyday for others. It truly was a beautiful event.
My sister has Spring Break this week (I’m so jealous!) so she’s staying at my place tonight to help us advertise early tomorrow morning. Wish us luck this week and definitely come out to our events if you’ll be in the area. They’re March 24th thru the 28th and are all listed on the UB Events Calendar. They include the film screening tomorrow of “Until the Violence Stops”, our “These Hands Don’t Hurt” campaign, The Vagina Monologues, and another show called A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer. Hope to see you there!
I had my last exam today for a while. It went pretty well and was followed by a day of endless events. I was definitely driving on a below empty tank of gas and that was a bit scary, but I luckily made it to the gas station before it was too late.
Tonight we had our final dress rehearsal for the Vagina Monologues and it was FANTASTIC! I’m so excited about the show and I’m really hoping we get a sold out audience. Everyone has clearly been working really hard and it shows. The shows are Wednesday and Thursday next week, and will be accompanied by many other events throughout the week.
Tonight, I’m going to be cutting quarter sheet advertisements to distribute to basically everyone at school. I’m also watching Titanic and eating Wegmans French Bread pizza. I realized about an hour ago that I didn’t eat anything all day! I guess that’s what happens when you get busy.
I decided that I’m sleeping in tomorrow before our final rehearsal for A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer, another show we’re doing next week.
Alright I have to run, it’s at the sad part of the movie when they’re freezing in the water. I will always love this movie!!
So for the past couple days my right leg has been hurting so much! I think it may have to do with the fact that my Modern Dance for Non-Majors class has gotten way over my head and I’m basically over exerting myself in order to keep up with the group. We’ve been doing all of these jumps and kicks and leaps that I’ve been putting so much pressure on my legs, or so I think. I don’t think I’ve been landing right and that’s what is causing the piercing pain that I’m currently dealing with.
I heard through the grapevine that the Indian restaurant on campus opened today. I didn’t get a chance to check it out yet but believe me, I will be there as soon as possible.
I’ve gotten crazily behind on studying/sleep/email respondings/life. Need use this weekend to catch up!
I was walking through the student union today and there was this table giving out free bottles of SoBe Life Water. The red one is fabulous and I’m pretty sure they were giving them out for free to promote the product, which they did wonderfully because now here I am spreading the word! Seriously though for only 80 calories it was a great drink with the little tinge of flavor. Divine…
I have a test on Friday which I really need to do well one. Better go and study for it now!
So my “To Do List” is getting longer and longer by the minute. I guess this is what I get for being lazy over Spring break and not doing anything very productive. This week I already had a quiz and am now counting down to finishing: another quiz, a paper, a test on Friday, 2 online homeworks due tomorrow, Mortar Board interviews, calls to potential students for Spring Open House, final preparations for the V-Day Campaign next week, and finishing grad school applications. At least that’s where the list ends as of now. I’m crazily sleepy at the moment but I guess sleep will come after finals.
In other news, I went to the mall for the first time in forever yesterday. Actually I’ve gone a couple times this year already, but never into the actual mall portion. They’ve been revamping our main mall, the Galleria Mall, for a while now and have this really posh section with fancy stores and new fancy restaurants. We’ve been going to some of the restaurants for our friend’s birthdays, which are fabulous by the way! I thoroughly recommend the eggplant parmesian at Bravo! if you ever come through the Buffalo area and decide to hit up the mall. Anyways, a friend of mine has an interview at UB Medical School and so we went over to the mall to find the perfect outfit. I ate Japanese food and went through a few of the stores. Normally I’m not a big fan of the mall but it was fun since I hadn’t been there in a while. I actually used to work at the mall so that might be where my hesitation comes from when it comes to enjoying the mall going experience.
It’s always nice to see everyone on the first day back from Spring Break. Everyone says the same thing when you ask how their break was…”Too short!”, “It felt like I never left”, “Wish I could still be [insert warm, beach-like Spring Break spot here]”. Totally true though. Come to think of it, I never did one of those typical Spring Break trips. Sigh…something else to add to my to do list.
Well, now it’s time to take a shower and start studying my tail off/emailing people back about one thing or the other. Goodnight!
This Spring break has been quite exhausting. However, I’ve been getting a lot of work done that I normally wouldn’t have time for which has been great. Basically just preparing for my graduate school applications and doing homework/studying to prepare for getting back to school. The week we get back I have a 2 quizzes, a test, a paper due and rehearsals for our show, the Vagina Monologues, to prepare for our dress rehearsal on Friday.
I don’t think I ever extensively talked about the campaign I’m running on campus! Well it is the V-Day College Campaign at UB for which I am the organizer this year. It is a global movement to end violence against women and we have a plethora of events going on that week, including the following:

Tickets for all of the events are actually available now at the SBI Ticket Office located at 221 Student Union on UB’s North Campus if anyone will be in the area and would like to support the cause. We’ve put so much work into it and I’m hoping it’s going to be a huge success.
In the meantime, I’m going to try to get some sleep before school starts. Need to get refreshed fast! Only a few more weeks left and so much to do. Yikes!
