getting sick at college

This past weekend I had to deal with a pretty wicked cold. My boyfriend has been sick for the past week and a half and I knew that I’d get it too eventually. Thankfully, we didn’t have that awful flu that was going around, just a really bad sore throat, headache, and coughing. I slept almost the entire weekend; I was awake for less than 8 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. The thing about getting sick while you’re in school is you really need to take it seriously, because homework and studying piles up quick. My opinion on the matter is that if you don’t feel well, don’t do homework, go to class, go on Facebook, or watch tv. Often times, college students get sick because they are just run down, tired, or stressed out. Over the past four years, I’ve learned that sleep is the best medicine to making a cold go away.

I had like 8-10 hours of homework that really needed to get done this weekend. About half of it was reading, a quarter taking notes, and a quarter prepping for upcoming exams or papers. Yes, it’s stressful to have important homework hanging over your head while you’re sick but what’s worse: worry about the work you will have to catch up on or prolonging your illness and getting your friends sick? I always opt to stay home and rest when I feel a cold coming on because I don’t want to deal with it longer than necessary. I hate going to class drugged up on dayquil, not being able to participate or concentrate. What’s the point? I don’t get participation points because I’m too out of it, my notes don’t make sense, more than likely I didn’t do any homework assignments or study for any quizzes, and I leave completely exhausted. Not a productive way to spend my time.

I’m not too excited to go to classes today not having read any of the material, but at least I’m going to class healthy and taking notes that make sense. I’m going to have to work hard this week to catch up but hopefully by Thursday I’ll be all caught up.
