Alumni Relations

Sunday was the 2009-2010 class induction of Mortar Board and true to my volunteer personality I ran for the Director of Alumni Relations and won. I’m really looking forward to a position on the Executive Board, in particular the Alumni Chair. I think that I am going to do a really good job with it and look forward to start getting in touch with all of the past Mortar Board members (of which include Wolfe Blitzer!). We had a nice time at the orientation before inductions, getting to know one another and talking about ideas for the upcoming year. I didn’t realize it before but Mortar Board takes people from all corners of the university! There were so many different people there, from all different majors, involved in so many different things; it was a cool opportunity to get to talk to everyone.

This weekend also brought a dark light upon my NCAA brackets. My love and life, the Syracuse basketball team lost to Oklahoma Friday night and with them went my brackets. I, however, was quite excited to see the #1 seed Pittsburg get thrown off by the #3 seed Villanova. I love this time of the year! The Final Four teams are four great teams and the upcoming games should be really exciting!

Keeping my fingers crossed but this week is looking a little bit more relaxing then last week. My workload has really died down until the end of April so until then I’m just going to be preparing for finals. I can’t believe it’s the last couple of days in March, where has this semester gone!?

((A big thank you to everyone who came out to Open House on Saturday!! It was an awesome day with DOUBLE the amount of people we had there last year!! Hope everyone had a great time!!))

Come on in, our House is open!

I’m sure as everyone else has mentioned Open House for Accepted Students is tomorrow and I’m so excited!! I love Open Houses more then anything. Especially since tomorrow is suppose to be gorgeous weather, it always puts people in a better mood when the sun is shining! :-) It has however been incredibly stressful in the office the past week trying to get everything ready for everyone. I hope everything goes well tomorrow and everyone has a great time!

I got a nice announcement this week. I got accepted to Mortar Board which one of my fellow bloggers, Andrew, is in. Mortar Board is the senior honor society here on campus, it’s a nationally recognized organization. I’m really excited about it and throwing around the idea of running for an E-board position such as Alumni Relations Chair or the Membership chair. I haven’t decided yet but inductions are on Sunday so I’ll have to decide by then.

Other then that I am glad this week is over. I had a huge Psych presentation on Thursday night that was 25% of my grade. It was stressful and only got better when about three quarters of the way through it I got the hiccups!! Horribly embarrassing but everyone just kind of giggled at it and I let my partner finish the rest of the discussion. I’m going to go back to my movie and my knitting while I have time left on duty! Hope everyone who is coming to campus tomorrow has a great time!!!

Register yourself!

Okay so maybe I didn’t do as much summer planning over Spring Break as I would have hoped BUT I did at least finalize my Fall 2009 class schedule and on Thursday I get to register! If everything stays hoping, and I’m praying everything does, then I will only have classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday will be reserved for my internship. The classes I am planning on taking are Criminology (a Sociology class), Drug Addiction (a Psych class), Cognitive Psych, Sign Language, Legal Issues in Health Services and my internship, as well as TA’ing for UB 101 again. I know it sounds like a lot but being a UB 101 Peer Mentor is not taxing work and my internship is basically just going. Plus my legal studies class is an on-line class so I can do that at my convenience. Altogether it is 20 credits so I had to go to my adviser for a credit override. Normally UB’s computer system only allows you to register for up to 18 or 19 credits so to do more you need approval from an adviser. They base it on your past grades and whether they think you can handle it enough, apparently I made a good enough case! :-)

It’s just hard to believe that I’m beginning to plan for my senior year. It feels like just yesterday I was meeting with my adviser to talk about how I wanted to switch my major (I came in as a pre-dental major). It was a huge turning point for me and was a really hard decision. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to a really good friend who is going through the same thing right now, and he’s my age! It seems that people’s minds are constantly changing, even in their third year of college.

This week I’m on duty tonight, tomorrow night, Friday night and Saturday night. It’s weeks like these that sometimes stress me out as an RA but the nice part about that is that after this week I will only have two nights of duty left for the entire semester so it’s kind of take what you can get. Plus it gives me a lot of time to not only catch up on some work that I may have put on the back-burner this weekend but also get ahead in a couple of my classes which is going to be nice for once!

My own personal holiday time

The NCAA tournament has started and if you’re not a college basketball fan, you should be. Although it’s disappointing that Buffalo didn’t get a bid it’s still really exciting to watch all of the games. College basketball is all about being on the edge of your seat, and being pulled into the game from tip off all the way to the very last seconds of overtime. I’ve got my bracket’s filled out and now just can’t wait to see how everything plays out!

Besides hitting refresh on Espn.com five million times a day I’ve been keeping busy at work. Spring Open House for accepted students is quickly coming up and the preparation has begun!  We are starting to get everything ready for the 28th so I hope everyone who has the opportunity to come down get’s a chance, it’s going to be an awesome day!

UB Idol is this coming Friday and I’m going to swing by that for a while. A couple of the guys in the Buffalo Chips who I’m really good friends with are competing so it should be quite entertaining to watch! :-)

Luck o’ the Irish!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The end of my vacation was awesome! I love going to Boston to visit family and it was a great chance to relax for a little bit longer. All my life my grandmother has been a knitter, sweaters, scarves, shawls…she does it all.  All of my cousins and I grew up wearing her amazing sweaters and we’ve given out hundreds to friends. So this break I decided I wanted to learn. I sat down with my grandmother one night and she sat by my side while I dropped stitches and tried to make sense of all of the yarn. Slowly I got the hang of it and now am on my way to making a halfway normal scarf! I’m so excited!

Sunday brought me quickly back to reality. I had a huge exam this afternoon so before heading off to the library I decided to check my e-mail and realized that I forgot that new door tags and a bulletin board were due for my residents Sunday at midnight. So after a little frustration and stressful searching I ended up getting everything made on time and still managed to sneak in a decent amount of studying, which was nice. I’ve worked really hard for this test so I hope it went well.

I wish I had more exciting plans for St. Patrick’s day but our RA staff hasn’t held a staff meeting  in three weeks so we have to get together, oh well at least we get our staff sweatshirts! :-)

It’s good to be back

I’ve been home for about two days now and it’s been amazing. The drive home wasn’t that bad but sometimes I definitely wish I lived closer to home. I wouldn’t mind if it were only a two hour drive but oh well what are ya gunna do!?

This morning was my first time back at my church in quite sometime. No matter what religion you are there’s just something comforting being back in a place that you basically grew up in, surrounded by people who watched you do so. Knowing the prayers, seeing people who have known me since I was born, it felt comforting. I wish that I could find a church like that in Buffalo. I’ve been searching around and been to a couple of them but nothing has felt right. If you’re from the Buffalo area and have any suggestions, let me know!

There is one plan for the rest of this week: R-E-L-A-X! I worked my butt off last week to make sure I didn’t have that much work left over to do. So sleeping in, seeing friends and spending family time is all that’s on the menu! :-)

And the planning begins again

With Spring Break just on the horizon (YESSS!!! :-) ) and a quick six weeks after that summer vacation, everyone has started talking about what they are going to do for the warm twelve weeks that we have off. I have decided that I’m going to start thinking about it over Spring Break and than after break going to start making some decisions. I have my job at the Admissions office that I love and would really like to work some hours, I’d really like to either continue my internship at the city courts or try and get a new internship, even if it’s not paid, it’ll be great experience and of course I’ll be working in the Hadley apartment complex.

Speaking of Hadley…Forget this summer plans, my sights are set on next year and I can NOT wait! It’ll be my senior year (which in and of itself is a mind boggling thing to think about) but I am totally excited for the classes that I am going to be taking. All I need is my adviser to give me a credit override because I want to take basically everything that UB is offering next semester. But we also just finalized the details of our living situation next year, I am going to be living with three of my best friends. And actually right above one of our fellow bloggers Ryan! I can’t wait for the three of us to be living together, it’ll be a great time and I think we’re all really going to get along well!

Now in wishful thinking I’m going to go start packing for home because maybe if I pack now the next two days will go by faster! =)

Cracking down

Okay I’m not sure if I’m suppose to admit this, especially on my blog {which my parents read} but I haven’t really done schoolwork in like the last two weeks. I have just had five billion things going on and I’m to the point in school where things aren’t due every class and it’s more like readings that are supplemental to the lectures. BUT {don’t freak out yet Mom and Dad} I’ve spent the last couple of days catching up. Yesterday I was hidden away in the library from like 11:30 in the morning until 9:00 at night. And than today I crawled into the Law library here on campus for five hours before STARS training to crack down. It actually felt really good to get all of that work done, I was really productive! I think I’m going to keep doing that this week just to get ahead of my reading so I have very little to do over break.

Speaking of break…5 days and counting until Spring Break!!!!!! Everyone is getting ready to go away, packing up their bathing suits for the beaches of Florida and Cancun and I couldn’t be more excited to go home. I forgo the sunshine and will take snow every day of break as long as I get to spend them snuggled away in my living room with my kittens and family surrounding me. So the less time I need to spend on schoolwork just means the more time I can spend relaxing with the family that I don’t get to see enough of.
